At 69 he is still doing all those things. Well, not a principal but still an amazing teacher. When I asked, him what keeps him going at this pace, Sid said, "If I can add value to anybody or anything, that's what I am here for". As for me, I don't know anyone that isn't better off in some way by coming in contact with Sid Spiva... and I am at the forefront of that line. I can say unequivocally, and I bet many of you will also say, knowing Sid has added value to my life and challenged me to be a better person.
I had the opportunity to have breakfast with Sid a week or so back and catch up on things happening in his life. One of the fun (but true) things that Sid and I both say about him is... "Happy face, sad face, same face." If you know Sid, you know he doesn't say a lot, but always has real words of wisdom. Sid doesn't get excited often, but always exhibits a passion for the important things. Sid doesn't show a lot of emotion but you know without a doubt that he cares for people.
Yes, if you know Sid you know those things. But here are some things you may not know. Sid was a part of Dolly Parton's band for 2 years when Dolly was the top female entertainer back in the 70's? Sid has served as Campus Pastor for the Faith Promise Campus in Anderson County. Then becoming the church's facilities/expansions director, Sid got his contractor's license at age 62 and lead several major renovation projects for the church.
Sid and Judy (his beautiful and also talented wife of 49 years) still take a couple weeks out of the year to ride their motorcycle out west with their friends. Sid just got back for doing a gig out in Montana and Texas with Buddy Jewell and will be going on the road again soon. Sid plays in Dollywood and Pigeon Forge regularly on weekends, Both Sid and and Judy often do day trips on the bike. The day we had breakfast together he was headed out to do some consulting on a major facilities project for his Church.
Even after knowing Sid for over 20 years, his love for Jesus, his family, his Church family, and his friends, can be clearly seen in his everyday life. Sid Spiva; is a real true Superlifer!
BTW...I did see Sid get excited one time. While on stage "picking" a Christian song, I saw it happen with my very own eyes. Both sides of mouth turned up with a big smiled, he began really tapping his foot, then looking out at the audience, I would have swore he nodded his head. I wish you could have been there.
