As One Door Closes… Seven Things I Learned In My 60s That Make Me Excited About My 70s

Tomorrow, I officially begin my seventies. I learned a long time ago that we should never stop learning. You might think that by the time we reach our sixties, most of our learning is behind us. Yet, at least for me, my sixties have been a decade of learning experiences.

SEVEN THINGS I LEARNED IN MY SIXTIES

1.    Instead of putting God first on my list, I learned to put God first in everything on my list.

2.   "Family, Everything Else Can Wait". I learned to make “Yes” my default word regarding anything family.

3.   I became intentional about learning one new thing every day. I started blogging and created my blog site. I finished the first chapter of my book, “Pinnacle”. I will be starting my podcasts soon. AND I learned how to play Dominos.

4.   I learned that “eating to live” rather than “living to eat” leads to a better and longer life. Although I still enjoy my “Hook and Ladder” from Firehouse, it’s only once or twice a year.

5.    I learned how to make exercising 6-7 hours a week fun. Pickleball, walk in the park, hike to some waterfall, or ride our bikes on the "Greenway", exercising is fun.

6.  As a patriarch, I've learned to consistently encourage my family AND offer advice only when requested. However, when advice is essential to alert them to potential challenges, I present it as a gentle reminder of something they may have forgotten or overlooked rather than something they missed entirely. With my grandkids, I frequently remind myself that I am a "grand" parent, not the parent.

7.    I learned to act immaturely whenever the opportunity becomes available.  I jumped out of an airplane at 69. Life is so much better when you laugh.

I WOULD LIKE TO GIVE YOU A PRESENT

If I could give you a present on my birthday, here is what I hope you can unwrap and use. God wants to walk with you and talk with you throughout your day. He wants to be involved in the little things just as much as the big things. That is when we can experience the peace and joy He wants us to have, no matter how old we are.

If you learned all these things earlier in life than I did, “kudos” to you. If not, it’s never too late to learn something new!.

LET THE BIRTHWEEK CELEBRATION BEGIN!
